It’s freezing outside. Well, freezing for Brisbane, anyway. But, I’m getting married in two months, which means I can’t afford to give in to my usual winter habits, which include eating a block of Whittakers peanut butter chocolate in front of the telly.

Lucky for me, there is a thing called hot yoga. Combining breathing, stretching, strength, and, most important of all, a room heated to 30-32 degrees, it’s the perfect exercise for this stressed out, cold, bridezilla (and you, too!).

Emerging from underneath my doona, I stumbled across to Harlow Hot Yoga, housed in a warehouse-style studio on Byres St in Newstead, and ventured upstairs to give it a try.

Now, I’ve done my fair share of Bikram yoga, but for those of you who’ve been scarred by Bikram’s recent antics, or break into a nervous sweat at the thought of one of those 90 minute, torturous classes, hot yoga at Harlow is nothing like that. For a start, there’s no set routine. It’s more like a yoga class in the tropics—delicious heat, and a flowing, Vinyasa-style practise. And the classes only go for an hour.

There are also different levels, with Harlow A being the toughest (but still do-able) and Harlow C focusing more on breathing and holding poses for extended periods of time.

If you know you’re going to be feeling it at the end of your class, you can order a fresh, chilled coconut to sip on while you recover (too cute!). You could even be fooled into thinking you’re at the day spa . . . if you hadn’t just been twisted like a pretzel not 5 minutes beforehand . . .

To get the best results, you need to head back to the yoga mat at least a couple of times a week, or you could try throwing in a few classes to help you recover from weights or cardio sessions.

TUL hot tip? Book online or via the Harlow Hot Yoga app. Classes do fill up, but the space is big enough that everyone isn’t sweating on one another!
